Why has the almost-forgotten Osama Bin Laden, the main reason the US has been campaigning in Iraq and Afghanistan for the past 10 years, been killed rather than seized?

Why has this news, with all its vicious detail, overshadowed the reports about daily bombings in Libya and Gaza? What opportunities does the elimination of Bin Laden open up to the US? Political expert, publicist and Russian Civic Chamber member Maksim Shevchenko discusses these questions with RT.

RT: As the US and US-based media has reported, Osama Bin Laden was killed at point-blank range, then buried at sea. Does this seem strange to you, and how would you explain it?

Maksim Shevchenko: The US ruling elite and society is in a craze over religion and mysticism. Even if Americans deny that, claiming that their state is secular, the semantics of having the man labeled “the world’s most wanted terrorist” buried at sea tell us that vulgar, fundamentally protestant mysticism still dominates the US psyche. All kinds of American priests and preachers, especially those in the dispensationalist branch, have compared Osama to a beast, emerging from the sea and called Islam the religion of the antichrist.

The ritualistic meaning of burying Osama at sea – if it was in fact Osama and not just another poor nameless soul murdered by the Americans – is therefore interpreted in that line of thinking as the beast’s return to the sea. The US is fundamentalist to a degree when this kind of vulgar mysticism defines on the subconscious level where the US military machine will go. It is a country full of Freemason lodges, spiritualist communities and protestant churches. That is why this nation’s actions, sentences and executions are packaged to have a mystical flavor.

RT: Young people are celebrating Osama’s death outside the White House and all across the US. Why are they celebrating?

MS: What do we care about US youngsters? They celebrate when their favorite baseball team wins. They celebrate the royal wedding in Britain. They cheer when they see the American flag. They weep when a pop star of a TV anchor dies. The joy and tears of these young people are deeply manipulated. The US society is controlled by the media. It is a deeply totalitarian society.

What’s funny is that they don’t understand that Bin Laden was just a figurehead. A myth made up by Republican fundamentalists to justify their goal of taking over the world.

Obama destroyed this myth today in order to reverse the American scenarios – to bring troops out of Afghanistan.

With Osama dead, the US doesn’t need a war in Afghanistan. I’m sure the Republican lobbyists will now make up another Al Qaeda leader who would be hiding in Toro Bora, or perhaps even Libya or Sudan, so that they can continue their endless imperialistic campaign. This is the fundamental truth: Rome needed wars. Peace would lead to insolvable internal conflicts between elites and between social groups. The Roman Empire existed in agony, on the borderline between war and peace. The US is the Roman Empire of today.

RT: Of what significance was Bin Laden’s death?

MS: Set against the background of the disturbances in the Arab world, the irreconcilable differences between the Muslim Brotherhood and the wahhabis, the escalation of tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the cooperation of Hamas and Fatah in Palestine, the threat of the Camp David agreement being severed, Israel’s terrorist abductions and murders of Palestinian activists on the territory of sovereign states, the assassination attempt against Muammar Gaddafi, the murder of his son and grandchildren and the injury of his wife – set against the background of all that, the news of Osama Bin Laden’s death looks especially interesting.

It might be an attempt to distract the public’s attention from the vile crime that is the bombing Gaddafi’s palace and the murder of his family. We are dealing with bold PR technology aimed at replacing an actual, real assassination attempt against Muammar Gaddafi and his family by the mythological elimination of the mythological Osama Bin Laden with his wife and children, who are also a part of the myth, in the public consciousness. I would classify this as a war crime that lies within the jurisdiction of the International Tribunal.

RT: Is Osama Bin Laden perceived as a real man in the Islamic world?

MS: He is quite real. The Muslim world knows a lot about the various stages of his life. A worldly playboy who spent his young years in 1970s London, surrounded by top models. Born into privilege, he went to Afghanistan in 1979, driven by his own concept of justice. He adopted quite a radical version of jihad in political Islam. People of that sort are quite numerous.

This is not about Osama himself. It’s about the mythological and propagandistic glitz that surrounded him. We will have to see what conclusions are made after his death.

Obama might use Osama’s death to put pressure on Israel in order to make it recognize a Hamas-led Palestinian state. Bin Laden is dead, the terrorist threat is no more and that means the time has come to recognize Palestine. This is especially true since Osama – the real Osama, not the Hollywood puppet sold by America for over 10 years – was an enemy of Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

RT: According to official reports, Osama was shot at point blank range. Many people are wondering why he was not captured and brought to court.

MS: It is a reasonable question. If he was shot at point blank range, could it have been done to prevent him from telling the world about the reality that he has played such a significant role in? We will never know now who was actually behind the 9/11 attack.

Hypothetically speaking, Bin Laden’s elimination gives Obama an opportunity to come to an agreement with Iran since Bin Laden was also Iran’s enemy.

What is important is that Obama proceeded to destroy the feeding trough that had fed the US elite so well for so many years. They fed on oil, gas and war. They fed on the myth of Osama Bin Laden.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, who was killed in a US-led operation on Sunday, traveled a long path from a university-educated strict Muslim to an infamous terrorist.

A boy from a wealthy family

Born in March 1957 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Osama bin Laden was one of more than 50 children of a wealthy construction magnate, Muhammad Awad bin Laden, who started as an illiterate immigrant laborer from Yemen who turned his construction business into a worldwide conglomerate.

As a result, Osama bin Laden belonged to Saudi Arabia's second richest family, with members of his extended family living and working in the US.

Osama reportedly received a degree from King Abdul-Aziz University in Jeddah – in civil engineering in 1979, or in public management in 1981.

Raised as a strict Muslim, Osama was radicalized by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. He visited the country on several occasions and collected money and supplies for the Afghan resistance, the Mujahideen.

Following his graduation he left for Afghanistan, to join the Mujahideen, going on to set up “a guest house” in Peshawar, Pakistan in the mid-1980s as a first point of contact for new recruits.

In 1986, bin Laden decided to set up his own training camps inside Afghanistan, but in 1989 he realized the need for an organized system in order to keep track of fighters who came through the guesthouse or trained at the camp. The network he organized was known as Al-Qaeda, or “The Base.”

The Mujahideens’ fight against the Soviet occupation in Afghanistan was backed financially by the US and Saudi Arabia.

Following the withdrawal of Soviet troops in 1989, bin Laden returned to his home country. But when the Saudis rejected his offer to defend the kingdom with an army of Mujahideen after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, and decided instead to invite a million US soldiers onto Saudi soil, it made bin Laden an opponent of the Saudi regime.

His anti-government activities led to his expulsion in 1991, when bin Laden relocated to Sudan, He ultimately returned to Afghanistan in 1996. Later the Saudi government froze his bank accounts and stripped him of his citizenship.

Waging war or revenge?

New attacks followed – however, this time US troops and citizens in various countries became the prime target. Bin Laden admitted to orchestrating some of the bombings, while some were attributed to him by US officials.

There was a 1993 attack on the World Trade Center masterminded by Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, whose organization, the Islamic Group, was believed to have links to the Al-Qaeda network. Then came the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Two years later, in October 2000, 17 US sailors were killed when their warship, the USS Cole, was struck near the Yemeni port of Aden.

Tuesday morning of September 11, 2001 propelled Osama bin Laden to infamy after hijacked planes were flown into targets in New York and Washington, reducing the 110-story World Trade Center to rubble and badly damaging the Pentagon.

The US reacted with force. After failing to persuade the Taliban government in Afghanistan to hand over bin Laden, the US invaded the country. However, he was nowhere to be found.

The man, existing on tape

Throughout the US campaign to find him, Osama bin Laden was communicating with the world through audio and video tapes which were from time to time broadcast by the Al Jazeera news channel.

In December 2004, he released an audiotape calling on Iraqis to boycott the elections and accusing Iraq's interim government of siding with the US against Muslims. He called on Muslims to oppose them as a matter of faith.

Surfacing after a year’s silence, the Al-Qaeda leader dramatically inserted himself into the November 2004 US presidential race with an address to the American people.

In the video tape aired by Al Jazeera days before the Americans went to the polls, bin Laden directly admitted for the first time that he ordered the September 11 attacks.

He told the American people that "the best way to avoid another Manhattan" was to stop threatening Muslims' security.

"Your security is not in the hands of Kerry, Bush or Al-Qaeda. Your security is in your own hands. Each state that does not attack us or harm us will be safe," he said.

In January 2006, an audiotape purportedly from the fugitive Al-Qaeda leader struck a more conciliatory tone, offering the US a truce, providing it withdraws its troops from Muslim lands. But he also warned that Al-Qaeda was preparing fresh attacks on US soil.

Just three months later, Al Jazeera television broadcast an audio tape purported to be from bin Laden, in which the conciliatory tone was gone and he appeared to accuse ordinary Westerners of supporting a war on Islam.

Dead or alive?

On September 23, 2006, the French newspaper L'Est Republicain, citing the country’s secret services, announced that the Al-Qaeda leader had died of typhoid fever in Pakistan. Later that information was rebutted.

In 2007, not long before her assassination, Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto said that bin Laden has been killed by Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the infamous British-born militant of Pakistani descent.

In November 2008, Michael Hayden, at the time the CIA director, announced that Osama bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan and no longer controlling the Al-Qaeda group on a daily basis.

For many years the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden remained unknown. Despite the military might of the US, tracking down bin Laden proved impossible – until now.

Musharraf condemns Osama Bin Laden kill operation.

Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf denounced the US led operation which killed Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan, arguing America violated Pakistan’s sovereignty.

“America coming to our territory and taking action is a violation of our sovereignty,” Musharraf told CNN. “Handling and execution of the operation [by US forces] is not correct. The Pakistani government should have been kept in the loop.”

The Pakistani foreign ministry however celebrated Bin Laden’s death as “a major setback to terrorist organizations around the world.”

On May 1 US President ordered a kill operation, sending in US Special Forces and Navy Seals to target and kill Osama Bin Laden.

"I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda and a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children," Obama said during a televised statement.

Acting on intelligence, the US launched an attack on a compound in the resort town of Abbottabad, Pakistan north of Islamabad. Four helicopters carrying specially trained forces descended on the compound around 1:30 AM local time. A firefight ensued, killing Bin Laden and others. No US personal were killed in the operation.

There was a fear however that disaster had stuck. One of the helicopters malfunctioned, stalling while hovering. The craft landed inside the walls of the compound, but was unable to restart.

“Obviously, everyone was thinking about Black Hawk Down and Desert One,” a senior administration official recalled to POLITICO.

“The assault team went ahead and raided the compound, even though they didn’t know if they would have a ride home,” another official said.

However, the helicopter malfunction did not stop the operation. Bin Laden was killed by a shot to the head, his body ceased by US forces and later buried at sea. Later an official confirmed to Reuters that America had no desire to capture Bin Laden alive.

"This was a kill operation," an official confirmed to Reuters.

Bin Laden raid inadvertently live Tweeted

As US Special Forces and Navy Seals descended on Abbottabad, a local resident took to Twitter to tweet what he was seeing and hearing – he had no idea what was going on was the raid that would kill Osama bin Laden.

Ironically, Sohaib Athar moved to the resort town of Abbottabad to get away from the action in Islamabad. His peace and tranquility would not last.

"Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event)," wrote Athar. “A huge window shaking bang here… I hope its not the start of something nasty.”

Several hours later Athar and his followers heard Obama would be addressing the world live from Washington.

"I think the helicopter crash in Abbottabad, Pakistan and the President Obama breaking news address are connected," tweeted one of Athar's followers.

Seven hours after his first tweet US President Barack Obama announced a US operation had killed Osama Bin Laden.

“Uh oh, now I'm the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it,” he tweeted.

Athar's tweets later became a sensation, as more and more people realized what he has accidentally covered. In addition to becoming a unique live coverage of the events, many began to joke with Athar about security in his neighborhood.

9/11 attack had a radical effect on global policies but did not lead to the split of Islamic and Christian civilization, political expert Dmitry Polikanov told RT.

”There was a global understanding that terrorism threat is number one, and it should be on top of the agenda and that consolidated efforts are needed to overcome this terrible security challenge,” he said. “Today, significant efforts of the international community and of the leading nations, of the Special Services, has actually resulted in serious progress in fighting terrorism.”

“Al Qaeda is slightly disappearing from the global agenda,” Polikanov added. “If you look at the number of terrorist attacks in the recent years, it has diminished and I think significant work has been done to ruin the grass roots of Al-Qaeda.”

”Of course, one of the most positive outcomes is that the world has managed to prevent the split between the Islamic civilization and the Christian civilization, and the attacks in New York in 2001 did not lead to the global divide between the two civilizations.”

However, according to 9/11 medical responder and Muslim American activist, Rudina Odeh-Ramadan, says that after the tragedy Islam is being used for political gain in the US.

”We are assigning collective guilt on one billion Muslims that practice this faith on the acts of 19 villains that basically defiled Islam and practiced a perverted version of Islam for political agenda,” she said.

“I think the great majority fear Islam because they do not understand it,” Rudina Odeh-Ramadan added. ”They do not understand the faith, they do not understand that Islam is a religion of peace. Islam does not condone suicide, Islam does not condone murder.”

On the ninth anniversary of the worst terror attacks to strike the US mainland, many questions remain unanswered, not least of all concerning the true identities of the perpetrators.

Three days after the events of 9/11 came crashing into our living rooms, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported the identities of the hijackers of the four US commercial aircraft. This was certainly record time for cracking the biggest crime case of modern times. However, the FBI seems to have jumped the gun in their haste to pinpoint the crimes to the 19 Muslim passengers. As things turned out, this would be no small oversight – and even a bit of an embarrassment – since several of the accused terrorists were reported to be alive and well.

One of the alleged terrorists on 9/11 was identified as Waleed Al Shehri, who the FBI accused of helping to hijack and crash American Airlines flight 11 into the World Trade Center together with four other individuals.

There was just one problem, however: Waleed Al Shehri is alive and at the time of the 9/11 attacks was employed as a pilot for Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Moreover, Al Shehri is not the only individual who appears to have been a victim of identity theft on 9/11. Indeed, less than two weeks after 9/11, British media reported that “the identities of four of the 19 suspects accused of having carried out the attacks are now in doubt.”

“The men – all from Saudi Arabia – spoke of their shock at being mistakenly named by the FBI as suicide terrorists,” reported the Telegraph of London. “None of the four was in the United States on September 11 and all are alive in their home country.”

One of the men, Abdulaziz Al Omari, was employed at the time of the attacks as an engineer with Saudi Telecoms. He told Arab media about the shock he felt when he saw his name on the terrorist list.

"I couldn't believe it when the FBI put me on their list,” Al Omari told Arab media. “They gave my name and my date of birth, but I am not a suicide bomber. I am here. I am alive. I have no idea how to fly a plane. I had nothing to do with this."

The other exonerated “terrorists” were identified as Saeed Al-Ghamdi, who works as a pilot with Saudi Arabian Airlines; Salem Al-Hamzi, who is employed at a petrochemical complex; and Ahmed Al-Nami, an administrative supervisor with Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Of the 19 alleged terrorists, seven of the men have subsequently been confirmed as being alive, yet their names remain on the official list of hijackers. Meanwhile, none of the names of the suspected terrorists were ever found to have been included on the official (original) passenger manifests of the hijacked flights. No explanation has ever been given for this oversight. When media reports do provide names of the passengers, however, they fail to say if the manifest was obtained from the airlines or not.

To date, the only piece of tangible evidence that any one of the 19 accused hijackers were actually on board any of the four hijacked aircraft was discovered on a sidewalk near the site of the World Trade Center complex.

Following the attacks, a passport belonging to Satam al Suqam, one of the alleged hijackers, was miraculously discovered in the vicinity of Vesey Street, near the World Trade Center.

"It was a significant piece of evidence for us," said one investigator.

So now the obvious question: How did the flimsy passport of one of the suspected hijackers emerge practically unscathed from the World Trade Center inferno, which was powerful enough to melt steel, and turn up on a New York City sidewalk?

The Guardian, for one, was highly skeptical: "The idea that [al Suqam's] passport had escaped from that inferno unsinged [tests] the credulity of the staunchest supporter of the FBI's crackdown on terrorism."

A look at the perpetrators

So who were the hijackers? The official story is that 15 of the 19 individuals accused of pirating United Airlines 93, United Airlines 175, American Airlines Flight 11 and American Airlines Flight 77 were Saudi Arabian citizens, trained in Afghanistan and, of course, fanatical Muslims born and bred on the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed.

The problem, however, is that the main terrorists on 9/11, namely Muhammad Atta, the alleged ringleader, and Abdulaziz Alomari behaved in a way that would not be considered normal for two dedicated Muslims who are about to commit suicide against "the infidel."

“It is the afternoon of September the 10th,” says Moni Ovadia, an Italian actor who provides narration in the film Zero: An Investigation into 9/11. “The next day will be the most important day in the two men’s’ lives. A day on which they cannot make any mistakes. But what do they do? They go on a trip to Portland! They spend the night there and they attract attention to themselves with their noisy revelry. They also pay with credit cards in their names. They do everything they can to leave traces of their presence there.”

At 6 AM on the fateful morning of 9/11, the two men fly to Boston. The plane that they are supposed to hijack, American Airlines Flight 11, which eventually crashes into the North Tower of the WTC, is scheduled to depart just 30 minutes after their arrival. This is cutting things extremely close.

The one piece of evidence that attempts to prove that these two individuals were on board this flight comes courtesy of CCTV video footage, photos that were beamed around the world as definitive proof of their involvement. The only problem, however, is that the grainy video grabs show the alleged hijackers boarding at Portland, not in Boston as widely believed.

But perhaps the most baffling details to emerge about the 9/11 terrorists is their inability to operate even the smallest aircraft, to say nothing of large commercial aircraft. Every flight instructor who had ever trained any of the alleged hijackers had nothing but negative remarks for their abilities to fly a plane.

Hani Hanjour, for example, who has been identified as the pilot who flew Flight 77 into the Pentagon, was said to have had problems landing even a small Cessna 172. Newsday reported that, “Even though Hanjour showed a federal pilot’s license…chief flight instructor…refused to rent him a plane.”

So on the basis of such poor piloting skills, how can we believe that Hansour was able to perform a flight maneuver with a lumbering Boeing 757 into the Pentagon that even a highly maneuverable fighter jet would have had trouble performing?

According to an article in the Washington Post, "The unidentified pilot executed a pivot so tight that it reminded observers of a fighter jet maneuver."

Meanwhile, the flight instructor who worked with Muhammad Atta and Abdulaziz Alomari, the two who were responsible for piloting American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower, described them as “dumb and dumber” when it came to their flying skills.

The mystery of the mastermind

One of the most incriminating pieces of evidence that is said to link Al Qaeda to the terrorist attacks of 9/11 apparently comes straight from the mouth of the terror mastermind himself, Osama bin Laden.

Following the 9/11 attacks, US soldiers stumbled upon a videotape in an abandoned house in Afghanistan that had allegedly sheltered Al Qaeda militants. According to the American translation of what is said on the tape, Osama bin Laden claims responsibility for the 9/11 attacks.

Marina Montesano of the University of Genova, however, provides a strikingly different opinion in the film Zero.

“A German TV network gave an alternative translation,” Montesano says. “It is completely different from the one given by American investigators. They (Al Qaeda) are not, apparently, claiming a role in the September 11th attacks. They are simply talking about what happened on September 11th.”

Montesano goes on to say that other videos containing Osama bin Laden are also inaccurate in their translations.

“Many of the other videos of Osama bin Laden have…a person speaking, and an audio track that does not correspond, or that corresponds very little, to what his lips are actually saying,” she claims.

Meanwhile, Giulietto Chiesa, a former member of the European Parliament and the producer of the film Zero, provided an incredible account of how the image of Osama bin Laden was manipulated to great effect during a European security meeting.

“People often ask me,” says Chiesa: “‘How can you doubt the official version [of 9/11] when Osama bin Laden himself appeared several times on television to say, ‘I did it.’”

Chiesa explains in his film: “In the summer of 2005, the Commission of the European Parliament for Security and Defense, of which I am a member, was invited to a special screening created by the Washington Center for Strategic Studies. We were asked to watch a film that depicted what would happen in Europe if Brussels was hit by a nuclear bomb – 50,000 deaths and 100,000 injured.”

The image that next appeared on the huge screen clearly took Chiesa by surprise, as well as the other European officials in attendance.

“Suddenly, footage of Osama bin Laden claiming responsibility for a nuclear attack on NATO headquarters comes on screen," Chiesa recounted. "All members of the Parliament, myself included, were rendered speechless. American experts from the Center for Strategic Studies were on hand to explain the action on screen.

“Then a parliamentarian finally said, ‘Today, we were shown a convincing demonstration of how Osama bin Laden’s image can be completely manipulated.'” 

The experience allowed Chiesa to consider the possibility that “all of the Osamas we have seen over the years may have never existed. Just as a nuclear attack on NATO headquarters in Brussels has never taken place.”

Finally, incredible as it may sound, even the FBI remains unconvinced about Osama bin Laden’s participation in the events surrounding 9/11. Although he is a wanted man for other heinous crimes, including the bombings of the United States’ Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya, which killed over 200 people, bin Laden is not wanted in connection with the attacks of 9/11.

On June 5, 2006, the Muckraker Report contacted the FBI Headquarters and asked why there is no mention of 9/11 on the FBI's web page. Rex Tomb, the FBI's Chief of Investigative Publicity, is reported to have commented, "The reason why 9/11 is not mentioned on Osama bin Laden's Most Wanted page is because the FBI has no hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11."

On the basis of that comment, some may be rightly wondering exactly why US and NATO forces are battling the Taliban in Afghanistan, which the US accused of “harboring terrorists” on the very same day that the events broke on 9/11, despite there being little or no evidence to connect Osama bin Laden to 9/11. 

Perhaps once Osama bin Laden is finally captured, he can shed some light on these nagging inconsistencies, otherwise the international community may be theorizing about 9/11 for a long time to come.

For the first time in practically ten years, the American authorities have given the world access to the complete set of evidence against the organizers of the 9/11 terror acts in the US.

­The evidence was made public as the Attorney General of the United States Eric Holder transferred the criminal cases of the terrorists to the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense, as the terrorists are to be tried by military tribunal at the Guantanamo base.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Ramzi Binalshibh, Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, Wallid bin Attash and Mustapha al-Hawsawi are considered to be the authors of 9/11. Their trial had been a matter of discussion for a long time, until on April 4 it was announced they were going to be tried in Guantanamo.

According to the data revealed, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was allegedly the chief coordinator, from conception and mastermind to realization. The idea of such a terror act originally emerged in 1999, when Khalid Sheikh Mohammed proposed to Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden the concept of highjacking commercial airplanes for terror attacks.

The American authorities obtained information on the terrorists’ money transactions, filings for visa documents and phone calls recordings. The US also have detailed information on how, where, and when the executors of the 9/11 terror attacks were recruited. It is know that one of the suicide highjackers was reportedly recruited by Ramzi Binalshibh in person.

Another prisoner – Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali – is allegedly responsible for providing the flight simulator to train the terrorists to fly and assisting in money transfers to the terrorists’ accounts. But the terrorists’ chief accountant is believed to be Mustapha al-Hawsawi.

Osama Bin Laden dead – Obama

The leader of Al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, has been killed, US President Barack Obama announced late on Sunday in an address to the nation from the White House. He is believed to have been buried at sea.

“Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama Bin Laden – the leader of Al-Qaeda and a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children,” Obama said in his address.

“Over the last ten years… we’ve disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense. In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government which had given Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda safe haven and support, and around the globe we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of Al-Qaeda terrorists, including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot. Yet, Osama Bin Laden avoided capture and escaped to cross the Afghan border into Pakistan,” the US president continued.

Obama said that in August 2010 he was briefed by the US intelligence on a possible lead to Bin Laden. It took months then to “run this thread to ground” and find out that Osama Bin Laden was supposedly hiding in a compound deep inside Pakistan.

“Finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama Bin Laden and bring him to justice,” Obama said. “Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.”

According to the US president, Bin Laden was killed in a firefight with US forces at a house in Abbottabad, some 100km from the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. A small team of American troops reportedly carried out the attack and took custody of Bin Laden's remains. Intense intelligence activity preceded the operation, he said.

“The death of Bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s efforts to defeat Al-Qaeda,” Obama concluded.

The news has quickly spread in the US and around the globe. Television channels show a large crowd gathered in front of the White House to celebrate. People are chanting “USA” and wave flags of the United States.
