NEC Android-based LifeTouch Cloud Communicator Debuts

NEC has announced the launch of its LifeTouch Android tablet which is a new cloud communicator and the customers in Japan will be able to pick it up by the end of the month for a yet to be specified price. The device, which was first unveiled back in June, will be exhibited at the C&C User Forum & iEXPO 2010 in Tokyo between November 11 and 12.

The tablet comes equipped with a 7-inch pen input-capable display (described as a “Retina Touch Panel”) and an ARM Cortex A8 processor. It also has a 3 megapixel camera, an SD card slot, built-in WiFi and GPS, and runs Android 2.1 operating system.
The device became a head turner for all the wrong reasons when it was unveiled. However, the company has refined the device a bit. In addition to ditching a handful of buttons, the tablet is also now being pitched specifically as a “cloud communicator” that’s especially well-suited for corporate customers.
The company claims that the LifeTouch cloud communicator will enable corporate customers to generate new revenues through customer services and to improve the efficiency of business operations through an optimized user interface.

Motorola Droid 2 OS update May Bring in Profiles UI

Motorola seems to be developing a refreshing look for its Droid 2 devices. Leaked reports indicate that an OS update is getting ready behind the curtains with new looks and indeed, new features

Early emerging details suggest that the Droid 2 users need not be jealous towards Droid Pro users anymore because the reported update seems to give Droid 2 the looks of Droid Pro.
A leaked screenshot shows that the new OS update will be offering profile options for the user to switch between a particular set of themes and other settings according to individual interest.
The leaked image shows an interface from which the user can select either a profile named ‘Home’, or ‘Work’ or a third one named ‘Weekend’. We are not sure if profiles with the same name and features will be included in the new update, but we feel that the new Droid 2 OS update will surely provide the profile option to the user like Droid Pro and many other similar devices.
Another interesting news leak regarding the Droid2 OS update is that it offers tethering capability. A leaked screenshot shows a UI which helps establish USB tethering connections. So in future, you can browse internet on your PC by connecting your Droid 2 via USB.

NVIDIA brings Fermi to Mac Pro through Quadro 4000

NVIDIA today brought its Fermi graphics architecture to the Mac at last by launching the Quadro 4000 for Mac. The workstation-class video supports the same features as its Windows counterpart and focuses heavily on general-purpose computing. It gives a lift to OpenCL in Snow Leopard and can greatly accelerate apps that are using NVIDIA's own CUDA language as well, such as video processing in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.
General performance also goes up compared to through a rendering engine that handles as many as 890 million triangles per second, the inclusion of 2GB of video RAM and a 256-bit memory bus that gives about 89.6GB per second of bandwidth. Dual-link DVI and a stereo 3D port are the main connections, but NVIDIA has unusually decided to equip the 4000 with a full-size DisplayPort and bundles an adapter to plug into a Mini DisplayPort screen.

The card will be available directly from the Apple Store later this month for $1,199 but will also be available through some resellers and the companies making the cards in different countries, such as PNY in the Americas and Europe, ELSA in Japan and Leadtek in Asia-Pacific. Using the card needs a Mac Pro from early 2008 or later as well as Mac OS X 10.6.5 or later.

Lenovo to bring LePad tablet to US shores in 2011

Lenovo's LePad tablet will have a US launch sometime in 2011, CEO Yuan Yangqing said on Friday. The company leader didn't provide a price or a ship date to the WSJ, but he also delayed the Android device's release in China, where it would now ship early in 2011 instead of the originally planned December. As much as $15.1 million was already being invested in mobile app developers to foster a custom app store that would launch with the LePad.
The 10-inch slate would originally have been powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 16GB of storage and 512MB of RAM. Whether or not the details will remain the same isn't as clear since the device would be shipping past its original release date. Lenovo still plans to make its cornerstone feature a dock, though it may not necessarily follow the previous pattern of having a full Windows 7 notebook (the IdeaPad U1).

Lenovo's mobile ambitions have struggled to get off the ground in 2010. While it did ship the LePhone to China, the LePad and its dock now won't have shipped for over a year after being unveiled at CES this past January. The Skylight smartbook has also undergone a complete overhaul with a switch to Android and a plan to use a dual-core Snapdragon. It too was pushed back to the end of the year but didn't get a 2010 ship date from Yangqing.

Its timing could put it up against a next-generation iPad as well as a slew of competitors arriving at roughly the same time as the LePad, including the BlackBerry PlayBook, the LG Optimus Pad, the Motorola Stingray and a possible HTC tablet.

Outside of the tablet space, the Lenovo CEO also hoped for his company to eventually claim the top spot in PC makers and move up from fourth place, mostly by accumulating market share in developing areas even at the risk of taking a loss. The company might acquire other computer makers to achieve its goal, Yangqing said, but he didn't name prospective targets.

LG tablet due early 2011 with Honeycomb, built as iPad rival

An LG executive today confirmed that the company's upcoming Optimus Pad would not only be a showcase for Android but was designed from the start to take on the iPad. The 8.9-inch slate should launch in the first quarter of 2011 and will ship with Honeycomb, now widely believed to be the true Android 3.0 build. The software is the "tablet PC" version of Google's OS, LG told MK.
Google has never formally detailed what Honeycomb would entail other than acknowledging its presence, but it has advised against using Android 2.2 and made no mention of a change in Gingerbread. A lack of native tablet support has been considered a weakness of Android and a limitation of the Galaxy Tab. LG chose to skip Android 2.2 likely for similar reasons.

When it ships, the Optimus Pad is expected to use a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor.

The LG manager also acknowledged indirectly that his company's tablet was a direct reaction to the iPad. It created a "taskforce" in early 2010 to design the tablet, around when Apple was unveiling its design. It has also been focusing on incorporating feedback from European and North American residents, both have whom have been the most eager iPad adopters.

While the Optimus Pad should be just one of many Android tablets launching in the period, the official reiterated that LG's model is designed to be more productive than the iPad. Most tablets are focused on content consumption like books and videos, but the Optimus Pad should be "more diverse," he said.

Android 3.0 ready for tablets by December, 4.0 in late 2011

Google should be ready to load Android 3.0 just as tablets based on it should be in testing, sources claimed late Monday. Engineering samples would arrive in December and would come quickly enough that companies could start showing their tablets at CES in early January. Acer, ASUS, HTC, Motorola and MSI would all have new models on show at the Las Vegas technology expo, Digitimes said, to ship later in 2011

Samsung would also show the Galaxy Tab upgraded to Android 3.0, they said.

The statements are said to reflect the high level of faith put in Google's platform as a chance of dethroning Apple from its near total control of tablets. Many have purportedly looked to Android as means of competing more fiercely on cost. As with Windows on regular PCs, Microsoft insists on charging $50 to $60 for a Windows 7 license on a tablet; Google's licensing is technically free, but the end cost would amount to $10. Windows' performance demands also require that it use costlier Atom processors where an ARM chip could save $30.

Android 4.0 has also supposedly given hope, though it now wouldn't ship until the second half of 2011.

Apple's lead through the iPad has previously been credited both to Microsoft's inability to spur on the Windows tablet market, even after nine years, as well as Google's heavy focus on smartphones without anticipating the rise of tablets. Many of the earliest tablet developers have had to use Android 2.2 or earlier, which Google itself advised against as it said the platform wasn't ready. The decision to forge ahead regardless gave fodder to Apple chief Steve Jobs, who dismissed early competitors entirely as not having any tablet-ready apps and having very little optimization.

Dell 10-inch Inspiron Duo convertible netbook due next week

Dell is expected to launch its 10-inch Inspiron Duo on November 23 according to a CNET report. The netbook tablet cross aims to give users the best of both worlds when it comes to combing work and entertainment on the go. It features a clever swivel hinge that allows the display to be flipped converting the Duo from netbook to tablet and back again.
It is said to pack Intel’s latest 1.5GHz dual-core Atom, which should help it deliver a better user experience when running Windows 7. However, a factor that may influence its success could be its weight. Many netbooks weigh in at around 2.8 pounds, while the new tablet form-factor Apple iPad weighs 1.5 pounds and has a screen nearly as large as most netbooks.

While pricing details have yet to emerge, the specifications would suggest a sub-$500 price-point, although it remains to be seen what sort of premium Dell will charge for its innovative dual-purpose functionality
