The HTC Rhyme

The HTC Rhyme is something of a delicate matter, as it is HTC's firstphone that is said to have been designed with a female audience in mind. Yet it comes in dull colours and looks quite a lot like every other HTC handset we’ve seen so far.

Asus EeePC X101 Goes Through FCC

The thin and inexpensive Asus EeePC X101 is already up for pre-order and Asus is making sure the netbook gets through all the regulatory requirements. The X101 is already going through FCC scrutiny as of this writing, with photos, specs and product manuals, to boot.

Asus made waves back in 2007 when they launched ultra-small and cheap notebook computers. Now, they’re trying to return to the netbook’s roots with the X101. Netbooks have evolved to include bigger hard drives, Windows, and other bells and whistles, and the price has also increased. But with stiff competition from tablet computers, netbooks need a refresh in order to keep competitive. The EeePC X101 will use a combination of inexpensive parts and the use of MeeGo Linux to reduce the price.
The EeePC X101 comes with a 10.1-inch matte screen with a 1024×600 resolution, 1.33 GHz low-power Intel Atom Chip, 8 GB of storage and 1 GB of RAM. Meanwhile, the X101′s more premium version, the X101H which has been submitted to the FCC beforehand, comes with a bigger 250GB or 320GB hard drive and Windows 7 pre-installed, but will come at a price premium.
At $200, the X101 is an ideal starter netbook, and will be adequate for applications that will require little space and processing power. The FCC report notes, though, that the X101′s memory and SSD are not soldered to the motherboard, which means users can upgrade these parts as necessary to increase the specs.

University of Glasgow Researchers Create Thousand Core CPU

Yes, that’s right…a thousand core processor. I had to read that one a couple times myself, but apparently, they’ve done it. And how they got to that point is by using systems that are commonly found in plasma and LCD televisions called Field Programmable Gate Arrays, or FPGAs.
An FPGA is a microchip with a bunch of transistors in it, and what the folks out at the University of Glasgow did was build their own FPGA, wiring up the transistors just how they wanted them and effectively turning it into a CPU with 1000 cores. From Dr. Wim Vanderbauwhede, the project’s leader:
“This is very early proof-of-concept work where we’re trying to demonstrate a convenient way to program FPGAs so that their potential to provide very fast processing power could be used much more widely in future computing and electronics.”
Interestingly, Intel was also working on a similar project, though just how much connection the University of Glasgow project had with it is unclear. It actually sounds like the University of Glasgow group may well have beaten Intel to the punch by actually creating the chip while Intel was working on theirs.

Asus Readying Four New Laptops, All Feature Sandy Bridge

It’s not every day that  a company looks to drop fully four new laptops in one product launch, so it definitely caught my attention that Asus was looking to do exactly that. The best part is, they’re all planning to boast the new line of Sandy Bridge processors, which is going to lend some serious muscle to their bottom lines.
The company that actually had to tell us how to say its name released some heavy information not long ago, describing how it was looking to bring out a slate of four new laptops all carrying the potent new processors.
First out of the gate is the big sluggers from Asus, the G53SW and G73SW. The G73SW packs a Core i7-2630QM processor, eight gigs of DDR3 RAM, a 17.3 inch display showing at 1920 x 1080 resolution, and a pair of 500 gig Seagate Momentus XT drives. Plus, you’ll get Wi-Fi connectivity, a USB 3.0 port (huge for those of you who love transferring massive files), Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M graphics and a Blu-ray drive. The G53SW, meanwhile, only has one drive (but it’ll go up to one terabyte, so not too much difference) and a 15.6 inch monitor, but aside from that, is mostly the same as the slightly larger model. These start at $1299, and go up to as much as $2714 from there.
The other two are the slightly toned down N53SV and N73SV, packing a 2.0GHz quadcore processor, and your choice of 15.6 and 17.3 inch displays respectively. Also, you’ll get Nvidia GeForce GT540M graphics, four gigs of DDR3 RAM, HDMI and again a USB 3.0, and–and here’s a nice surprise!–audio courtesy of Bang and Olufsen. Pricing here, meanwhile, starts out at $1197, which really isn’t that bad for a good high-powered laptop
, and these definitely seem to have the kind of power that would rate higher price tags.

MSI Expected To Unveil Slew Of New Tablets & Notebooks

This latest is for MSI and makes it seem like they will have their hands full including new offerings in the tablet, notebook and netbook categories.
Yup, despite the earlier suggestion when DigiTimes said MSI would be phased out of the netbook market in the coming year, they are now reporting that they will be unveiling the Wind U160 DX netbook which will come touting the standard netbook sized display, 10.1 inches.
As for notebooks, this is perhaps the widest category for MSI and CES. It looks like these will include offerings from the G series (gaming), F series and C series as well as some ultra-thin models. The ultra-thin models look to include the 12-inch Wind U270 and the 13-inch X-Slim X370 both of which are said to feature a dual-core processor from AMD.
The remaining notebooks breakdown as follows; the 17.3-inch GT780 and the 15.6-inch GT680 and GE620 in the G series, the 15.6-inch CR650, CR640, and CX640 in the C series and yet to be specified models in the F series. Though, the F series models are said to include “MSI’s own raised totem seal coating and color film print to protect against scratching, wear, and smudging.”
And lastly, the tablets. These include two offerings, the WindPad 100W and the WindPad 100A.
“MSI will unveil two new WindPad tablets. The WindPad 100W features the Wintel platform and the WindPad 100A with the ARM/Android platform. They are natively equipped with modules such as G-Sensor gravity detecting devices, an ALS light sensor, and Wi-Fi.”
In addition, both the 100W and the 100A will feature 10.1 inch displays, G-sensor and Wi-Fi with the 100A running (a yet to be specified version of) Android and the 100W running, you guessed it, Windows 7 Home Premium.
