The HTC Rhyme is something of a delicate matter, as it is HTC's firstphone that is said to have been designed with a female audience in mind. Yet it comes in dull colours and looks quite a lot like every other HTC handset we’ve seen so far.
Let’s get one thing straight from the start. The Pentax Q is quite an incredible camera to behold. It’s tiny. But not only is it tiny, it also looks great.

JVC Stunning new little High-Speed Camera GC-PX1 has on display today at CP+ 2011, and after spending some time playing with it I have to admit that I’m deeply in love and need to book a sample to review ASAP! Despite its “cheap” plastic the GC-PX1 is really impressive and its 300fps video mode, even in VGA is stunning! Another great little aspect about this camera is it’s surprisingly light body and easy do handle grip design. Unfortunately only at the “Prototype” stage, JVC displayed a 4K2K version of its GC-PX1 and GY-HM100U that I would love to see made available to the public this year. To be far I don’t give a XXX about 3D but, what I want is to get a real compact 4K2K camera in my pocket… JVC please HURRY-UP!

TGMY has turned Mitsuhoka Himiko, a “tuned” Mazda roadster with unique “retro” style bodywork, into a powerful EV Car capable to reach up to 550km of range on a Single Charge.
The secret here is simple, more the better and TGMY tuner Himiko comes with 168 lithium polymer cells quadrupling the normal amount of cells that we usually find in such car. A nice little achievement but TGMY does not speak of the speed used for this test, we assume that in order to reach such mileage TGMY had to run as smoothly as possible with speeding like a maniac on highways.
We just came back from Canon’s press conference where the company introduced today two new entry level DSRLs with the Kiss X5 (Rebel T3i) and Kiss X50 (Rebel, T3). Both models don’t come with stunning improvements but just enough to keep us interested to get a DSLR instead a Point and Shoot. The Kiss X5 comes with the usual DIGIC 4, a new Automatic Mode, the A+, Video Stamp, SD, SDHC and SDXC support, with a 18Mpix CMOS, a tilt/swivel LCD monitor, ISO 6400 Max, Full HD video mode in H.264 with a 3x or 10x Digital Zoom. Announced at 50,000 Yen (Body Only), the Kiss X50 comes with a 12.2Mpix CMOS, a DIGIC 4 image processor, SD, SDHC and SDXC support a 720p video mode and ISO 6400 Max. Both the Kiss X5 and Kiss X50 comes with different Photo and Video mode including like the usual Diorama or Tilt-shfit mode for example.
While these cameras are not really what I am looking for in a DLSR, both models have pleasantly surprised me. The Red Kiss X50 is elegant and will attract a wider range of customers. Both models comes with a new grip and button layout design that giving an easier access to the camera functions and making the transition from a Point and Shoot to a DSLR even easier.

As was expected (thanks rumor mill), Sprint announced their newest Android phone tonight in New York City – the Kyocera Echo. The phone has got a folding design with dual-touch displays, making up a combined 4.7-inch screen. The dual-screens are really the start of this device. Sprint is promising four ways that an app and the user can use the dual screens, and they’re kind of interesting.
As far as the specs, the Echo is running a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with Android 2.2 (No 4G!). Each screen by itself is about 3.5-inches (aka iPhone size), but when you’ve got the second screen popped out – it makes it a total of 4.7-inches, which Sprint is promoting as “the biggest phone display from Sprint yet.” Sort of a technicality, as it’s not just one big screen. Sprint’s webpage is promoting these as the “four modes” of the Echo:
Single-screen Mode: The phone is closed. You’re using just one 3.5-inch screen, like a regular Android phone.
Tablet Mode: The phone is open, and you’re using both screens like one 4.7-inch tablet. Well, one with a hinge in the middle.
Simul-Task Mode: You can run two apps at once. I guess this is like real multitasking (Sprint has trademarked the term “Simul-task”) but the functionality of this mode has already been questioned.
Optimized Mode: This is what I’ll call “Nintendo DS” mode. Apps will use the two screens to their advantage. For example, in the press images released by Sprint, they show a YouTube app. The top screen is showing the video while the bottom screen is showing all the YouTube menus like “next videos” and “related videos”, etc. This could be the most promising from a user’s perspective.
What do you think about the phone? Initial reaction on Twitter and Android fansites by my count seems to be overwhelming negative. The hinge is awful design in the year 2011 (Remember the BlackBerry Style? Yeah, Sprint had that phone too.) Tablet mode, in my opinion (without having tried the device – we’ll ask Sprint for a review unit) is completely useless with the hinge cutting through the screen. How could you play games like Angry Birds like that? Anyway, the phone is coming for $200 on a two-year contract. No exact release date except for “Spring 2011″. Sprint does have a mailing list up on their site, so you can pop in your e-mail if you’d like to be informed as soon as they start pre-orders for this phone
the Samsung SCH-R910 Forte has recently been spotted in an FCC filing, which as many realize, is one required step towards actual availability. Of course, this does not guarantee a release, however according to the latest in the rumor mil — that is coming on February 11th. Unfortunately, nothing all that surprising was revealed in the filing, no photos and no additional specs that we did not already know. Bottom line here, this is just that formality step and the only goodie given was not all that exciting. Then again, MetroPCS users may be excited because the Forte will make for a nice addition in terms of devices that support LTE. Otherwise the Samsung Forte is also expected to arrive sporting a 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and a microSD card slot. In terms of the display, we can say that it will be WVGA, however there is nothing in terms of the size. Still, none of these specs have been officially confirmed as of now. And speaking of further speculation — Android. We can tell you that the Forte will be an Android handset but similar to the other missing parts — we are unsure which version of Android to expect. Previous reports have hinted at Android 2.2 or even 2.3, however given the timing (assuming February 11th is accurate) it would be reasonable to expect 2.2 as opposed to 2.3. Bottom line, the Samsung Forte is coming to MetroPCS and it will be an LTE compatible smartphone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. But aside from the release date, we still need the pricing, which for a pre-paid handset could be make or break.
While the details on this one have yet to be confirmed by Google, it looks like the ViewSonic ViewPad 4 smartphone is going to arrive sporting Android 2.4 in April. As in just a few months from now.
Of course, the real key here is that this could mean that the ViewPad 4, which was originally announced during CES, is going to be one of first to be available with Android 2.4. Or maybe, the first to arrive with Android 2.4. It would also mean that Android 2.4 would be available several months earlier than we first expected. That said, the details are coming by way of Pocket-lint who have stated that;
“Viewsonic has exclusively told Pocket-lint that its recently announced ViewPad 4 smartphone will be packing Android 2.4 when it launches in April.”
As to why the release with Android 2.4, and this is where it gets slightly confusing.
“It’s to ensure compatibility with dual-core apps,” our agent explains before adding that “it will still be called Gingerbread.”
So yes, it will be Android 2.4 and it will still be Gingerbread, which many already know as Android 2.3. Further details stated that this will ensure that dual-core apps designed for Android 3.0 Honeycomb will be able to run on single-core devices using Android 2.4. Bottom line, the ViewPad 4 is expected to arrive in April and it will be running Android 2.4, which will be going by the same Gingerbread codename as Android 2.3. But then one has to wonder what happened to Ice Cream, after all we already saw the Android team over at Google roll out the big statue. Then again, this would not be the first time we had seen confusion with what to expect in terms of Android 3.0 and Android 2.4, though previously it was described as 3.0 coming to tablets while the 2.4 was coming to smartphones. Ah, so confusing, but hopefully we will hear something a bit more official come from Google to clear up some of this confusion
The iPad is surely an intuitive tool to use, especially with its touchscreen and the OS specifically designed for touch computing. However, using your fingers might not necessarily be accurate enough for graphics editing. But a new Apple patent might change that
Apple has recently been granted a patent by the USPTO for a stylus design that can sufficiently manipulate capacitive touchscreens traditionally designed for finger input. Being that fingers are wider than the point of a typical stylus, a capacitive touchscreen will require sensitive points that are far and wide enough. However, when a regular stylus is used, the touchscreen might not register the input properly. Apple’s patent for a stylus will involve a conductive element at the end of the stylus, such that the touchscreen will properly sense where exactly it is on the surface. The design also allows the stylus and touchscreen to sense different levels of pressure and angles. The patent also introduces concepts of using different twisting and turning gestures to control the functionality of the pen (such as selecting brush width, stroke, shading, eraser functionality, and the like. This means that the user–an artist, perhaps–can have better control over the drawing. Apple also claims that the system can be used for other applications, such as gaming, in that the pen can be used similar to a joystick. This development might mean that Apple is targeting getting into the graphics tablet market, in direct competition with tablet makers like Wacom. The additional functionality that a tablet computer in acting as a graphics tablet input is an interesting application for tablets like the iPad and its other contemporaries like Androd-based tablets
The iPad 2 is now said that it will ditch the heavier aluminum casing for a carbon fiber shell. Apple has heard iPad users that said the iPad is too heavy for a mobile device (and it is, in fact, too heavy to hold in certain situations), and the next-gen tablet is apparently going to be slimmer. We already heard the tablet will sport a slimmer, thinner display and that the full tablet will be slimmer than the original. Using a carbon fiber shell can only help make that iPad 2 even lighter. Moving on, we hear that the tablet will come with NFC support. NFC, or Near Field Communications technology, is going to bring new features to the iOS universe as iPhones, iPod touches and iPads could be used for all sorts of interesting features, including e-wallet features. But what’s most interesting today is that Apple, despite dissing the 7-inch tablet format through its official spokesman, acting CEO Steve Jobs, during an earnings conference call is again rumored to work on that particular format. While the iPad 2 will most likely be a 9.7-inch device, sources said that a 7-inch component was manufactured by Apple’s suppliers which means such a tablet could be in testing in Apple’s labs as we speak. We can only expect that those Apple people working on the smaller tablet have sharp enough fingers to deal with such a smaller screen size. If not they could always use some Apple sandpaper to file down their fingers so they could actually use a 7-inch iPad 2. Now these are, until proven otherwise, just rumors so we’ll stack them in the iPad 2 rumor pile that is getting bigger and bigger every minute. And despite all that, we still don’t have a clear release date for Apple’s next-gen tablet.
Myriad Group AG, a global leader in mobile technology having shipped over 3.7 billion software applications on more than 2.2 billion phones, today announced the launch of Myriad Alien Dalvik, enabling Android apps to run on non-Android platforms. The launch opens up the Android experience to new audiences, generating new revenue opportunities for mobile operators, OEMs and app store owners.
Building on the launch of Dalvik Turbo, Alien Dalvik signifies Myriad's latest Android innovation by enabling Android apps to operate on a much wider range of platforms and devices. As a result, operators, OEMs and application store owners can now easily access the Android ecosystem and deploy Android applications across multiple device operating systems, all without compromising performance.
Alien Dalvik enables the majority of Android applications to run unmodified, allowing application store owners to quickly kick start Android application store services by simply repackaging Android Package (APK) files.
From a user perspective, Alien Dalvik is completely transparent. Alien Dalvik applications appear as native and can be seamlessly installed on device without user disruption. All the user sees is that he now has access to a wider range of applications, thus encouraging a higher frequency of downloads and increased ARPU.
"The proliferation of Android has been staggering, but there is still room for growth. By extending Android to other platforms, we are opening up the market even further, creating new audiences and revenue opportunities," said Simon Wilkinson, Chief Executive Officer, Myriad Group.
From application components to complete device integration, Myriad provides best-in-class Android solutions. As a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), Myriad has been playing a key role in Android solutions since its early days. When partnering with Myriad for Android application development or porting, operators, OEMs and application store owners will benefit from Myriad's rich heritage in Java technology and unique Android expertise.
Myriad Alien Dalvik will be commercially available later this year on the MeeGo platform. Other platform support will be announced in the coming months. Alien Dalvik will be demonstrated for the first time on the Nokia N900 at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 14th-17th at the Myriad hospitality suite located at The Avenue, Stand AV91
The Sharp IS01 is already old news in Japan and internationally but since it’s only available in Japan there’s not much video coverage on it, so I thought I’d take a look at it. It is also identical to the slighter newer Lynx SH-10B which has a slightly modified chassis and sells under Docomo rather than AU.
It’s unusual in that it sports a clamshell design with a keyboard and trackball, so it’s just as MID as it is smartphone. It sports a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen with a 960 x 480 resolution which is bright, vivid, sharp and exhibits excellent viewing angles. One major downside (apart from it and all Japanese phones being SIM locked) is that it sports the aging Android 1.6 OS with no plans for an upgrade to newer Android versions. There’s also a 5.3MP auto focus webcam on the lid but it only records 640 x 480 video at 15 FPS, and a front facing 854 x 480 camera. You can grab these off Yahoo Auction (eBay of Japan) for a measly 16,800 yen ($200) but I’ve read that you can’t even use them for Wi-Fi due to the SIM / carrier lock issue. I need to look into this!
Interesting that China Telecom is adding a 7 inch tablet in their mobile technology portfolio. The tablet has a 7 inch, 800 x 600 pixel resistive touchscreen display running a Freescale i.MX515 processor with Google Android 2.1. There are also a few other key specs that make this tablet interesting, the fact taht 720p HD video playback is offered makes this a decent option. Connectivity wise this handheld offers WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, GPS, SIM Card slot, SD card slot and a USB port. Additions specs include 1.1 pounds and may have 512MB of RAM, 1GB of storage space and a stylus.
Price wise its pretty expensive with a contract you’re looking at about $180 and $700 without a contract! In my opinion it should be free or $30 with contract and $180 without contract, but maybe I’ve been hanging out in the back alley’s of Shenzhen a little too long!
Gigabyte is entering the tablet space with a 10 inch Windows Home Premium Tablet called the S1080. Under the hood of this multitouch capacitive 1024 x 600 resolution display are an Atom N550 N570 (the hands on model was N550, it will be released with N570) dual core CPU, a 320 GB hard drive, SD card slot, a speedy USB 3.0 and a VGA out port. You don’t see many tablets with VGA as most are opting for HDMI, but I guess if you’re looking to hook this up to an external monitor in the business world VGA is still pretty common. This tablet is being pushed forward as a business tablet, something along the lines of the HP Slate, which we know only sold around 6000 units.
Looks at the hardware design we can see that the screen already sports Android navigation buttons. This is a little confusing since the only timelines Gigabyte can hope to follow at this point for Android would be Honeycomb and Android 3.0 is not meant to need these navigation buttons. Similarly for navigating around Windows they have included a mouse pointer as well as a left and right mouse buttons. I hope that they are planning on dropping the profile of the device in the next build as it is a little thick for my liking.
We have no word on pricing but availability for the tablet should be in March just in time for honeycomb.
A lot of folks were excited about Motorola’s Atrix Tegra 2 smartphone showcased at CES last week (us included, see our hands on video) as it came with a dock that can transform the device into a desktop experience, provided you have a monitor and keyboard, and another ‘laptop dock’ that effectively turns the device into a super thin and light 11.6-inch smartbook with 2x USB ports, chiclet keyboard and decent sized trackpad. No release date was mentioned other than it was heading to AT&T. Today, Android Central has been tipped off with leaked internal AT&T documents showing a launch date of March 1 but apparently the telecom launches phones on Sundays so there’s a chance it may be another date.

Looks like the rumor mill is hard at work this morning as HTC and Motorola are both rumored to be working on a tablet. DigiTimes reports that both companies have placed orders for NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset.
Last week at Nvidia GPU conference they didn’t have much to say expect that Tegra 3 is coming! Which isn’t very comforting since we are waiting on Tegra 2 devices. So this news steps in line with their marketing ramp up for major announcements at CES. Everyone was skeptical but fingers crossed that this is the Tegra news that Nvidia been hinting about.
According to DigiTimes, Asus will also ship a device with a Tegra processor — which isn’t new news but its nice to hear this rumor again.
The SmartQ V5-II is a nice affordable iPod competitor. It’s a well designed wi-fi only device with very decent video and gaming performance. While Apple’s iPod has the SmartQ V5-II beat in looks and its the Android Marketplace vs Apple’s App Store debate where this 4.8inch beauty stands out is its HDMI out, and with a little application ingenuity the ability to tether your tablet to your 3G phone.
