Fujitsu made an upgrade to its ETERNUS LT20, LT40 and LT60 tape libraries by introducing LTO-5, the next generation of LTO tape drives. With introduction of LTO-5 the ETERNUS LT models will be capable of higher speed of reading or writing on tape, while reducing the required number of media slots, resulting in a cost reduction for storing data due to its large capacities. The upgrade will provide up to 3 TB of storage, helping client with much smaller system with more capacity on less tape. Overall, the new technology is expected to cut down spending on media by around 63 percent, according to Fujitsu. The LTO-5 offers a throughput, expanded speed matching and increased data buffer size. In regard to security the LTO-5 features WORM (Write Once, Read Many) and encryption capability.
