Today we’re looking at two brand new handsets the ZTE Skate and the Huawei Ideos X3, which were both on display in Barcelona. One is a basic mid-ranged handset while the other one is closer to the high-end of the Android ecosystem.
The Huawei Ideos X3 is, as we speak, a non-working device. We’re looking at a mockup that’s placed in it’s own special dock, and, as you can see in the images below, everybody is urged not to touch it. When I first spotted the enclosure from the distance I thought I was looking at some sort of new MiFi but that wasn’t the case, and that became quite obvious once I approached it. Eventually I was allowed to take a look at it up close and personal, but just like the Ideos X7 Pro tablet I saw earlier this unit wasn’t working.
The Ideos X3 will most probably be a very affordable device, which the masses will enjoy. We’re looking at a 3.2-inch handset capable of sporting Android 2.3 Gingerbread under the hood, which is something other cheap Android handsets out there won’t offer, at least not right out of the box.
If you’ll want to spend a bit more money on an upcoming device then the ZTE Skate could be the handset you’re looking for. The device was present at ZTE’s booth and for a company that hasn’t managed yet to impress the western carriers with its Android devices yet, the Skate is quite a remarkable machine.

The Skate comes with a large 4.3-inch screen, the kind we’re used to seeing on popular handsets like the HTC Thunderbolt, the EVO 4G, the Motorola Droid X or the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S 2. Under the hood we find Android 2.3 Gingerbread (the real deal with no custom UI on top), an 800MHz processor (which will be strangely matched by the CPU of the small HP Veer), Adreno 200 GPU and a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash along the regular GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity features.
Not that it would matter much but the Skate has a pretty original back case that features that popular Android figure you’ve grown more than used to, and the phone looks pretty elegant and quite comfortable for a device with such a screen size.
The Skate will certainly be cheaper than all the other 4.3-inch handsets out there but more expensive than the Huawei Ideos X3 we’ve seen before. Both handsets will come in spring, but we have no clear launch dates yet.
