Impressive, polished.

Saw the interview with the CEO on Bloomberg TV the other day and can't wait for the next couple of iterations - including streaming video.

Everything logged in easy as pie.

WOW! First, WOW! Did I say, WOW!? I've wondered what was taking DirecTV so long to produce an iPad app after having had an iPhone/iTouch app for quit awhile. I can honestly say this was worth waiting for. It seems that there is quite a bit of data it needs to gather so a bit slow getting all of the panels updated initially. Once it does, the controls are outrageous and quick! As quick as you can use the built in remote, the actions take place on the tv in front of you as if you were holding the IR remote. If this is what they produced on version 1.01, I'm certainly looking forward to the next release!

Would love to use this app but i think it should be noted that if you have whole home DVD you can't connect to the Internet as well, which is what makes then on demand and this app work. Directv will sellnyou a connection kit though, for 75 Dollars!!!! Way too outrageously expensive, plus it has to be "professionally installed"

Uh, there are plenty of folks who did their own connection - DVR to home network.

www.dbstalk.com has several threads on the process - none of them especially difficult, ethernet or wifi, which is what I used.

With an Apple-based network, it's a piece of cake.

Note: I haven't done the whole-home trip - no need to, yet. But, tying into the wireless network is handy for downloads on demand.

I just plugged a patch cable into the back of my DVR and into a router that I have for my media center. It connected right up. I don't have DirecTV's Whole Hoise DVR though as we only have one television. The new app woke great and I don't even need the standard remote any more.

Now if there was a similar app for my Blu-ray player.

When you have whole home dvr set up, it doesn't allow you to do ethernet connection at the same time. Just how they have it set up I guess. that is why you have to get this special expensive connection kit.

Here is a similar story

DirecTV, looking to join Xfinity and Dish Network in their efforts, announced that an official iPad application is in development. The handy app will give users full control over their satellite TV service and will allow DirecTV subscribers to browse shows, set up recordings, and control their DVRs using Apple’s intuitive tablet.

While the company already offers an iPhone app that lets subscribers view listings and schedule DVR recordings, it’s obvious that DirecTV is looking to expand their user base with an updated iteration specific to the iPad.

According to that same page on DirecTV’s official website, the app will launch at a home screen that gives you the latest info on shows and movies you’re watching. Also featured will be upcoming listings for your favorite shows and even a sports roster complete with scores and upcoming schedules.

In configuring it last night, I found that you can create as many 'favorite channel' panels as you wish and put your own heading on the panel. I've created one for news, another for sports and another for misc. favorite channels. These are updated realtime and show the program currently playing for each channel in your list. You can tap on the program to get 'info' as you would on your set top box. You can then choose to record it to the DVR of your choice. It all works quite nicely and improves the entire user experience above and beyond looking for programs and channels on the set top box.

I have been a DirecTV subscriber for 15 or so years. I got the whole-home DVR setup with Internet and only paid the $50 labor charge which is/was required (the tech visit).

They don't tell you this, but you earn points based on subscription length and those points can be used for upgrades. I've done this several times over the years and had enough earned for all the hadware. You have to call; you won't see the free upgrade options via your account on the web site.

Works well...sports section does not load (perhaps it's just me).

Clicking "playlist" on the bottom, it only shows you that receiver's playlist rather than the multi-room playlist; however, if you call up the remote and click on "playlist", it brings up the mult-room playlist on your TV.

It's quite sleek and very, very responsive. Like the iPhone app, scheduling recordings is much easier than on the TV screen.

I also like how you can "heart" your favorites and view only those in the guide to see what is coming up.

I suspect an upgrade is coming to allow you to stream content to the iPad....I have a Slingbox, but directly streaming from DTV would be nice.
