Development of High Performance 8-bit Microcontrollers with Embedded Flash Memory

Fujitsu Semiconductor Asia has launched a new series of 8-bit microcontrollers with built-in analog comparator and operational amplifier. The development of 32-pin MB95430H series is a response to growing demand for 8-bit microcontrollers for small system control that posses embedded comparator as well as amplifier function, especially within Asian markets. The new microcontrollers are targeted to be used in home appliances and industrial equipment such as induction induction cookers, power tools and auto-testers. The new series of microcontroller, includes a one-wire on-chip debug module which uses only one pin on the microcontroller for debugging purposes, as well as high-precision CR oscillation circuit as system clock source in reducing the external components for customer’s development when necessary.
The new MB95430H series come with four comparators and one operational amplifier, which can be applied to various high-speed samples, alarm circuits, auto-control circuits and measurement techniques, as well as quick sensors, power supply voltage supervisor circuit to name a few. Release of 23-INCH LED-BACKLIT MultiSync LCD Monitor by NEC Display

NEC Display released its brand new 23-inch desktop Led-backlit MultiSync E231W LCD monitor targeted at business clients. With its advance features, the new E231W monitor allows it user to open several applications simultaneously, plus its fully-ergonomic design includes 110mm height adjustment, tilt, swivel as well as pivot for ease of use. The new monitor offers reduced power consumption as well as reduced heat generation, and an ambient light sensor for detecting external light source for adjusting the display’s brightness. 
The new E231W comes with its ECO friendly feature, the Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) capable of switching to a lower power mode or automatically powering down altogether when the monitor is on but not in use. The new monitor features 1920 x 1280 full HD resolutions, 25,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, full connectivity with DispalyPort, VGA and DVI inputs, multi-directional OSD NaViKey, NaViSet administration software for centralized control to name a few. Toshiba’s new “Wipe Technology” has been designed to ensure improved data security and reduce the risk of data leakage that are associated with document image data stored on copier and printer systems. Wipe comes with new capabilities such as world’s first ability for sensitive user data to be securely erased in an event when a system is powered off or when a SED HDD is removed from the system. Launch of Supercomputer for Use in development of Drugs for Treatment of Cancer Relapse and Metastasis

Fujitsu and University of Tokyo have successfully built a supercomputer that can be used for development of anticancer drugs. The built of the supercomputer would enable the researchers to device supercomputer simulations in designing basic structures for antibody drugs, paving the way for development of 3rd generation antibody drugs with fewer side effects. There type of drugs is expected to treat types of cancers with a high incidence rate in Japan, including cancers of the lung, colon, stomach, liver, pancreas, prostate and breast, as well as the advanced staged cancers that have relapsed or undergone metastasis. For the first time ever, the new research will use molecular dynamics to design artificial antibody drugs. This is done by simulating interaction between antigens (protein) that are part of a cancer cells and antibodies (proteins). In comparison to traditional IT-based drug development simulations which is through observing the interactions between simpler molecules and proteins, new method required approximately 10 times the quantity of calculations, which has led the researchers to use supercomputer, capable of performing large amount of calculations in a shorter time. Through use of supercomputer, researchers are aiming to design antibodies in a matter of a few months, shortening the design process which would have required at least 3 to 4 years.
The new supercomputer is a cluster of 300 PRIMERGY BX922 S2 blade server nodes, where each node features 2 Intel Xeon X5650 processors, allowing a total of 600 CPUs and a theoretical peak performance of 38.3 teraflops, where each teraflop translate to one trillion floating point operations per second. The inter-node communications is equipped with an InfiniBand QDR network interface capable of data transfer of 4Gb/s, while permitting a high-speed parallel calculations. In respect to storage the system is equipped with 5 ETERNUS DX80 disk array units with an effective RAID6 capacity of 1 petabyte.

NEC Display Unveils a New 43-inch Bar-Type Display for Digital Signage Market

NEC Display Solution of America has introduced a new 43-inch bar-type LCD display. The X431BT is a new addition to company’s X Series LCD display, specially designed to offer digital signage solution to the businesses that do not have an environment for standard-size screens, such as transportation facilities, quick-service restaurants and retail stores. Furthermore, the new X431BT extends the messaging options through DisplayPort, HDMI and DVI-D connectivity. The bar-type display can be used for various type of content, which include menu boards, scrolling text as well as advertisement for new promotions. To further accommodate client with displaying information in different modes, the new X431BT can be set in Picture in Picture (PIP), Picture on Picture (POP) and side-by-side modes, where the two contents can be displayed simultaneously in any of these modes through either maintaining one aspect ratio or by evenly stretching both images to fill each half of the screen.
The new X431BT comes with 1920 x 480 native resolution and contrast ratio of 3000:1 as well as 500 cd/m2 brightness (700 cd/m2 maximum brightness). The new X431BT can be set in landscape and portrait orientation. The new display comes with advance thermal protection and sealed panel designed for protecting display in less than optimal environments. The X431BT comes with enhanced video wall capabilities, including TileMatrix (up to 10 x10), TileComp, copy function and individual or group ID functions. The new display is ENERGY STAR 5.0 and is TAA compliant. The estimated retail price for the new X431BT is $3,799.

World’s first new ecology mail system “Handy Eco Mail”

“Handy Eco Mail” is simply a mail packing system using tape and address label directly on a pamphlet instead of using envelop or vinyl for packing the pamphlet. When the pamphlet gets through the “Handy Eco Mail”, it automatically closes the open side of the pamphlet with tape. Oh did I forget; the user has to place the address label by hand which company claims this would eliminate any needs for using envelop. The tape that has been used in “Handy Eco Mail” features a weak bonding characteristic allowing it to be easily removed without damaging the surface of the pamphlet, but at the same time it does not come off easily since it is made of Japanese paper (WASHI). “Handy Eco Mail” has been already used for company newsletter and a direct mail. “Handy Eco Mail” is developed by Tomei Engineering for the purpose of reducing waste. According to the company use of “Handy Eco Mail” will contribute in reduction of waste from one-tenth to one-twentieth. The maximum fitting thickness is 8 mm for up to A4 size making it difficult to be used for thicker magazine and like, and it comes with a hefty price tag of 840000 yen. Well, I really don’t see the ROI on this little gadget, but I assume for a company that sends a lot of pamphlets on a daily bases, the “Handy Eco Mail” is a heavenly solution. Also, why on earth the address labeling couldn’t have been included as an automated function in “Handy Eco Mail”. This would have probably added some merit to this one and only machine in the world. Well, as I always say, you can’t stop progress.

iPhone app a threat to the stethoscope

The iPhone could soon replace the doctors' best friend, the traditional stethoscope, thanks to a free application created by a University College London [ Images ] researcher.
Peter Bentley invented the 'iStethoscope' application which monitors heartbeat through sensors in the iPhone as just a bit of fun.
And, more than three million doctors across the world are signing up for the free application.
"Everybody is very excited about the potential of the adoption of mobile phone technology into the medical workplace, and rightly so. Smartphones are incredibly powerful devices packed full of sensors, cameras, high-quality microphones with amazing displays."
 "They are capable of saving lives, saving money and improving healthcare in a dramatic fashion, and we carry these massively powerful computers in our pockets," the British media quoted Bentley as saying.
While he said that he had originally invented it as a fun toy, experts in the medical field have said the software is a major advance in medical technology which has saved lives and enabled doctors in remote areas to access expertise.
In fact, in the future, it could be possible for people to conduct their own ultrasounds or monitor blood pressure through smartphones, say the experts.

No Bones about it - new iPhone stethoscope app is putting sci-fi medical technology into practice

THE sci-fi medical technology of Star Trek's Dr Bones McCoy is even closer to reality, with a new iPhone stethoscope app that doctors are already using to save lives in Britain.
The Daily Mail reports today that more than three million doctors have downloaded an iPhone app which is replacing the stethoscope in UK hospitals.

The iStethoscope app was originally created by Peter Bentley at University College as a gimmick  but now more than 500 users a day are downloading the free version of the app to their iPhones.
To use the app, the iPhone is pressed against the chest where its built-in microphone is able to pick up on the heart's beat.
The user then shakes the iPhone to hear the last eight seconds of recording and see a phonocardiograph display and a spectrogram. The diagrams can then be emailed to a specialist.
