Development of Robotized Home Environment to Help Individuals with Disabilities by AIST

Currently available disability aids equipment has been developed based on a customized functionality in order to accommodate the condition of each individual’s type of disability. This has resulted in high equipment cost, preventing its wide spread use and preventing improvement in quality of life for individual in needs of such equipment. However, through advancement in network technology where ordinary integrated devices with modularized functionality can be interconnected in a built-in network, has helped manufacturers to develop new products with shorter development cycle and reduced cost, paving the way in development of customized disability aids equipment for each individual at an affordable prices. Based on this concept group of researchers at AIST (Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) have developed a human interface technologies comprising of a gesture input device and a speech input device. The gesture input device is responsible for detecting the movement of person through a stereo camera, where it calculates the changing shape of the person three dimensionally at high speed and has the advanced function in identifying gestures in a non-contact, non-constraint manner, allowing the individuals to control the equipment by simply moving hand, shoulder, or head.
Through modification of the software, the gesture input device can be adjusted to match the changes in the movement of a person with a progressive illness. The other piece of equipment in this system is a speech recognition device capable of recognizing unclear speech as a tool in controlling home equipment, as well as bearing a capability of working with other input devices. Additionally, the system comes with active caster with a built-in motor, as an output device in assisting individuals, where the object to be moved can be simply maneuvered by the casters attached to it. Based on weight and size of the objects, more than one caster may have to be attached. The caster may not have to be attached to each position since the position is automatically calculated and the object can be maneuvered remotely. To make it all work together the system comes with a RT middleware, making it possible to customize the system for each individual need. With distribution of various aids equipment throughout home in a network, the home environment can be considered as one system disability aids, with functionally distributed across a room. Based on this system AIST has developed three type of home environment models; a home equipment control assist system helping people with mobility impairment, cooking assist system designed to help individual with brain dysfunction due to stroke with their cooking training, and an environment management system to detect changes in the home environment helping people with visual impairment

Development of New Technology Designed to Prevent Vehicles Potential Rear End Collision by NISSAN

This may come as a welcoming news for major automobile insurers, helping to reduce number of fender benders and back lashes type of claims as a start. Well, according to Nissan announcement, the company has developed a new technology which Nissan calls it “Forward Collision Avoidance Assist”, a technology that has been developed to address both potential rear end collision one being in helping the driver to avoid hitting the vehicle immediately ahead of it in the lane as well as helping to reduce the potential risk of sudden braking, causing the vehicle to be rear-ended by the vehicle approaching form behind. The new system is capable of avoiding possible collision at forward speeds of approximately 60kph, the highest among the forward collision avoidance systems.
The system uses a highly sensitive radar sensor for monitoring the distance from the front vehicle and its relative speed. In an event that deceleration is required, the system alerts the driver using both a screen display as well as sound, and afterward the system will generate a force that pushes the accelerator pedal up while smoothly applies partial breaking to assists the driver in slowing down the vehicle. In an event where, a possibility of a collision is high, the system will automatically apply harder braking and tighten the driver’s seat belt. The new development is part of Nissan
“Safety Shield” concept.

TOSHIBA Showcases its New 3D CELL REGZA LCD TVs Offering Real Time 2D3D Conversion Technology

Toshiba has showcased it new additions in its CELL REGZA LCD TV Series integrating the Cell Broadband Engine developed jointly by IBM, SONY and Toshiba, offering a superior multimedia processing and advance CELL platform. The new addition includes CELL REGZA 55X2 (55-inch model), CELL REGZA SLIM 55E2 (55-inch model) and CELL REGZA SLIM 46XE2 (46-inch model). All models come with 3D capabilities, offering 3D “Super Resolution Technology” capable of upgrading 3D content in to superior near high definition content, this is done by taking the 3D delivered content separately to left and right eye through “side-by-side” system, a system that divides the frame horizontally for left and right side and send separate data to each eye simultaneously, causing to halves the resolution of the image received by each eye.
Furthermore, all three models comes with 2D3D real time conversion technology allowing the viewers to enjoy 2D contents as a high quality 3D. But here is the catch; the contents that have been converted from 2D to 3D cannot be recorded as 3D content. The new TVs comes with storage capacity of 3-trabyte (TB) of hard disk drive, where 2TB is dedicated to the CELL REGZA’s “time-shift machine 2” capable of recording simultaneously up to 8 channels of digital terrestrial broadcasting, but watch out, when the hard disk dedicated for this function gets full, the system will delete oldest program on the hard disk. The new TVs among multitude of features, offers high Luminance 1,000 cd/m2 at its peak, which is by the way is industry’s highest level of brightness, as well as delivering contrast ratio of 9,000,000:1 and AutoView function for 3D, offering optimum picture quality through automatic fine-tuning of backlighting and white balance in response to the changes in color contrast and brightness. The 3D glasses come with the TVs, utilizes Toshiba’s crosstalk technology, capable of minimizing crosstalk, image blurring by controlling the On-Off switching of the backlight and the open-close of the shutter in the 3D glasses. The new TVs comes with CELL REGZA Block Noise Clear, which is a HD distortion removal technology, where as the name suggests is capable of removing distortion of HD images based on analysis of 8 x 8 blocks of pixels. This is done by estimating the strength of block distortion, the maximum luminance of the surroundings as well as maximum image inclination, resulting in reproduced original images, all in real time. The new CELL REGZA TVs comes with Quattro High Speed Clear function, capable of creating a complementary frame in response to the fast movement, so for the original sources that have a frame rate of 24Hz, the Quattro Motion Clear produces and inserts nine complementary frames. All three models will hit the market within October of this year. There no suggested retail price for any of these TVs as of yet.

Development of New Moving Object Detection Technology for Vehicle by NISSAN Motor

The currently available Around View Monitor System for vehicles using screen display, has been designed to help the driver to steer the vehicle easily into a parking a space, using both the screen display as well as an audio buzzer in notifying its driver of moving objects around the vehicle, such as people. The system helps to complement the driver’s vision in such event as leaving parking space or entering into a junction or intersection with a poor visibility. In an effort to improve further the Around View Monitor system without adding an additional sensor, Nissan Motor has developed a Moving Object Detection (MOD) function in helping drivers by providing them with additional information when starting the car or driving at low speeds.

Development of Two New Industry’s First Steering and Braking Technologies by NISSAN Motor

Nissan Motor has set a record by announcing two new world’s first steering and braking technologies. One is “Electro hydraulic Power Steering system” and “Electric Driven Intelligent Brake” systems. The Electro hydraulic Power Steering system is smaller than traditional power steering systems in which the motor is activated only when the driver is steering. It offers both the advantages of steering the natural and smooth steering of hydraulic power steering, while offering an improved fuel efficiency of electric power steering.
The Electric Driven Intelligent Brake is a system that utilizes the vehicle’s electric motor for directly operating the brake cylinders, as a result when the driver steps on the brake pedal; the necessary brake force is maintained while hydraulic pressure of the friction brake is controlled in order to help maximizing the energy regeneration of hybrid motor. Due to this direct control of brake cylinders by motor, the new system can be applied to future hybrid vehicles. The new system will be mounted on the Infiniti M Hybrid, a luxury hybrid model planned to be launched in 2011 both in US and Europe.

Development of a New Advance Encryption Scheme, a Potential Solution to Security Risk in Cloud Computing

In a joint development by NTT and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric made an announcement on development of new Novel encryption technology addressing security risk in cloud computing paradigm. The new scheme is a fine-grained encryption capable of sophisticated and fine-grained data transmission and access control. The new scheme uses a mathematical approach known as “dual pairing vector spaces”.
In fine-grained encryption various parameters are added to the ciphertext and decryption key in the encryption-decryption logic, where attributes and predicates on them become the parameter of the ciphertext or decryption key.
The new scheme can be applied to variety of application due to its capability to be used in two distinct forms, one being, where the attributes become the parameter of the decryption key and predicates as that of ciphertext, and in the other form, attribute as the parameter of the ciphertext and predicates as that of decryption key. In the first form, the user will be able to decrypt and access the data using the decryption key when the attributes of the decryption key satisfy the pre-set predicates within the ciphertext, where application includes management of confidential information in companies, as well as personal information within database of public organizations. In the second form, data and attributes will be encrypted as a set and each user can only decrypt and read the data if the attributes of the encrypted data satisfy the predicate in the decryption key. Application for this form includes content distribution as well as database management in financial and medical fields. In case of content distribution the content providers will encrypt contents like animation, films with its attributes and place the encrypted contents in a cloud computing database. Base on this form user will be able to view the contents by decrypting it through use of decrypted key when the contents’ attributes satisfy the decryption key’s predicates
