 Sharp new AQUOS  blu-ray recorders are industry first recorders supporting the new BDXL format  for multi-layer recordable blu-ray discs, with the aim in expanding recordable  storage capacity available on a single disc. The new BDXL format extends the  allowable dual-layer format storage capacity of up to 50GB, to triple-layer  discs at 100GB as well as quadruple-layer discs at 128GB.

The disc drive by the way was developed by Pioneer  Digital Design and Manufacturing Corporation, which is a joint venture of Sharp  and Pioneer, focusing on the optical disc business.
