This is a rumour on top of a rumour, so bear with us! If RIM does go ahead and release a third version of the BlackBerry Storm model, it may introduce a new operating system at the same time, but this time it could be a QNX-based OS7.
If you’re trying to place where you heard the name QNX recently, it’s in relation to that other highly anticipated BlackBerry device, the PlayBook tablet. Well, RIM and QNX could be planning a complete overhaul of the smartphone OS too, with the Storm 3 being the first device to show it off to the world.
The Storm 3 hasn’t been officially announced, although it has apparently been given the codename of Moncao and will boast a 3.7″ screen; it’s also likely to be very important to RIM, who need a top-spec, desirable phone to attract starry-eyed consumers away from the likes of the iPhone, the Desire HD and the HTC HD7. An all-new touchscreen BlackBerry boasting a multi-tasking, super-slick new OS could be just the thing.
Time is of the essence though, and we’re not sure whether waiting for QNX to appear on the PlayBook first is the best plan, but we have a feeling that’s what’s going to happen. The flipside is that if QNX’s new OS blows us away on the tablet, it could be all the promotion RIM need for a big, early 2011 Storm 3 announcement.
