'wind heater' by jihae kim - iida awards 2010

'wind heater' by jihae kim from korea is one of the shortlisted entries from more
than 4000 participants in the 'iida awards 2010' competition, organized by designboom
in collaboration with incheon metropolitan city.

to stop the alarming rate at which trees are getting burned in the desert, the project aims
to utilize wind power to give the people an alternative way to heat their homes.

designer's own words:
'it can be expected that half of all our land will end up as deserts with this current tendency
of desertification. thankfully, the NGO and government bodies are trying to plant trees
in deserts and recover of the desert ecosystem looks hopeful. but despite this, the speed
of desertification is gettting faster because the main reasons haven't been solved yet.
the easiest way to keep warm during the cold nights is to make fire with the existing trees.
no matter how many trees get planted, we cannot stop desertification without solving
this problem. this can be solved with our current technology. there is a lot of wind in
the desert. we can build a heating system using wind power and the natives do not have
to burn branches for neccessary heating.'
