Development of Industry’s Largest High Definition 3D Display Without Use of Special Glasses

Group of researchers at National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT) has successfully developed a 200-inch 3D display technology that does not require wearing special glasses, allowing multiple users simultaneously view natural looking 3D images given on individual’s movement without any needs for special glasses. NICT has already developed a 70-inch 3D display that does not require special glasses using multiple projectors. But in order to achieve high presence communication using 3D images, development of larger 3D display was needed allowing multiple viewers to simultaneously observe 3D images. However one of the issues in developing such system under the conventional methods can cause several issues including existence of strip noise which is responsible in reducing 3D image resolution as well as producing unnatural images as the individual moves. Based on this, researchers have adopted new method which was based on numerical analysis of the factors causing reduced image quality in order to increase the image size. Based on this, 200-inch display system was made.
The researcher solve the issue of strip noise which occurs between parallax images, by determining that the noise is influenced through uniformities of brightness and color balance in the parallax images, and compensating the brightness uniformities and color balance between projector units by power-controlling LED light sources. The display screen using this method requires a special diffuser film and a condenser lens. Through this method light control accuracy of the display screen influences the resolution as well as natural motion parallax of 3D images. Using this technology, more than 50 parallax images can be displayed on the screen. Therefore, increasing the parallax images will result in larger viewing area. The research will continue in doing such that by increasing the parallax images to 200, and develop the display technology to be used in such application as design, public viewing, digital signage as well as show room displays.
