Twitter Touts 100 Million Active Members

At a press event as of recent, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo revealed that Twitter now has 100 million active members. The company defines an active member as someone who logs in once a month – half of these active users log in everyday. Forty percent of the active users don’t tweet, but the site still gets around five billion tweets every five days.
The site grew an astounding 82% since just this January, and it aims to double the number of active users in the next four months. Most of the growth seems to be in the mobile space, though — 55% of the active users tweet from mobile devices. Twitter‘s growth is undeniable, but its creators never really disclosed numbers prior to this, so you have to ask why. And like any other rapidly growing company, Twitter rattled out numbers to assure investors that its new advertising schemes will work out.
One of Twitter’s major advertisement push is promoted tweets. Unlike before when you only see promoted tweets of companies you follow, you’ll apparently start seeing promoted Tweets of other companies not in your list. It might sound annoying for some, but hey – at least the service remains free. Aside from these official numbers for business, Twitter also came up with some fun facts and numbers. For example, did you know that two-thirds of the NBA has Twitter accounts? Make sure to check out the Twitter blog for more!
