Japanese Paper Pegs Playstation Phone For Spring 2011

now we’ve got what looks to be a possible release date for the so-called Playstation Phone. Japanese paper Asahi Shimbun is pegging the release as sometime in spring of next year.
The Playstation Phone is, at last report, a combination of a cell phone and a PSPgo, while retaining the basic controls of a PSP, a development that no doubt has Marcus twitching and foaming at the mouth. Poor guy just went off on iPhone users for their lower-end gaming selection and now he’s got to deal with this? Course, the fact that Marcus hasn’t posted a new video in almost two months on his YouTube channel probably doesn’t help…but anyway! And considering that we’ve already heard one report pegging a release date in April, the word from Asahi Shimbun does nothing but help.
Sony, meanwhile, is saying that they don’t comment on speculation, which is a safe non-answer that likely means there are already plans in the works to do just that, but considering that Kaz Hirai went on record not so long ago describing what such a device would likely look like, well, that’s sort of a boost to the theory that one of these devices is well on the way.
And why not? Sony could use a way to compete with iPhone’s virtual supremacy in the do-it-all phone field, and if Sony can put out a cell phone that does games that make Angry Birds look sick, well, then why on earth not do it? Sony’s got the marketing muscle and the resources to make a serious play against even the heavily entrenched iPhone (Kevin Butler probably has to be one of the greatest mascots of the New Millennium), so I’m personally looking forward to spring for one more reason this year!
