Fujitsu Laboratories has announced the development of new hybrid energy harvesting device capable of simultaneous electricity generation from either source of heat or light. Development of single device to handle both heat and light as the source will enable the use of sensors in applications and areas which were not possible. In addition to this, it offers a great potential for powering a variety of sensors networks and medical sensing technologies.
The hybrid electricity generating capability comes by changing the electrical circuits connecting two types of semiconductor materials namely, the P-type and N-type semiconductors, resulting in a device that can function as a photovoltaic cell or thermoelectric generator. For the development of this device Fujitsu Laboratories has developed an organic material that is suitable as generator in both photovoltaic and thermoelectric modes. The new device paves the way for such sensors that monitor body temperature, blood pressure and heartbeats, without any needs for batteries and electrical wiring.
