Motorola chief hopes for Android tablet early in 2011

Motorola's co-CEO Sanjay Jha has expressed hope that his company will be ready to introduce an Android tablet sometime early next year. Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Technology Conference in San Francisco, the executive hinted at the company's outlook regarding Android-based smartphones and the current tablet arena.
Although Jha credited Android with helping boost the company's position in the smartphone market, he also suggested the latest versions of Google's mobile OS do not yet offer the attributes necessary for proper use in tablet devices.

"I see the tablet market as an opportunity; no cannibalization with smartphones," Jha said, according to an
AFP report. "iPad is more an extension of iPhone than a migration of a Macintosh. I think that is a natural expansion for us."

The executive has previously hinted at Motorola's interest in tablets, making similar comments shortly following Apple's iPad launch. More recent reports point to a 10-inch tablet, which is rumored to be Google's official flagship device.

A number of rumors suggest that several companies, including Motorola, are waiting for Android 3.0 as the optimum OS for upcoming tablets. Acer is said to be readying three of such devices, while HTC is rumored to be preparing its own offering for an early 2011 release. Samsung widely expected to launch its Android tablet ahead of the pack this week, albeit with the current v2.2 OS.
