We talk a lot about phone apps, be they iPhone or Android, and with good reason. They provide us with a lot of services that we couldn’t ordinarily get. But most people don’t likely think about apps for the television, and Samsung wants to change that by offering up cash prizes (and free televisions, too) to developers who put some useful applications up for the television in their Free the TV Apps contest.
Sure, there are plenty of apps right now–Samsung’s App Store has doubled in size since its CES launch and that was just a few months ago–but Samsung wants more. To that end, they’re putting up $500,000 along with some home theater packages to the developers of the best applications in several categories: video, gaming, social media, sports and kids.
Several big-name judges will pick the winner, and there will even be a People’s Choice award that we’ll get to vote on. The contest runs from now until November 11th, and you’ll need a working app submission and a video description to enter.
