Development of Novel system for Creating a Virtual Reality Space through Touching 3D Images by AIST

OCTOMBER, 2010 ·
Group of researches at AIST has developed the i3Space, a system that creates a virtual reality (VR) space. The new system provides the user with feeling of touch as well as resistance in the air when the user views the 3D images (haptization), as well as facilitates direct manipulation of virtual objects of 3D images with fingers through three-dimensionalization of multi-touch operations. The new system consists of a real-time VR space creation system, which simulates the tactile and kinesthetic sensations for 3D images, the non-base-type haptic interface that uses sensory illusion, as well as multi-position tracking system capable of measuring movement of fingers.
The GyroCubeSensuous device which was also developed by AIST has been used as the haptic interface in this system. I am sure you can think of few fitting applications using this technology. We just have to wait for AIST to come up with commercial products
